"Sell-through" refers to how well your website converts visitors into buyers. This is one of the most important concepts in web marketing. I am going to explain sell-thru in simple terms, and then show you how to use your your site's sell-thru to project your future sales. It's amazingly simple. Then I'll show you some things you can do to increase your website's sell-thru.

Before we dive in, I'd like to offer you an evaluation copy of Traffic 2000, which you can download while you are reading this. Just click to www.Traffic2000.com/download (this page will open in a new window) This is the best marketing course you'll find anywhere, it's won awards and is recommended by 33 (yes 33!) top ezine publishers. The download takes about 5 minutes, so start it now and by the time you get to the bottom of this webpage it will be downloaded.

Now back to our discussion on sell-through. Let's say that you receive one order for every 120 visitors to your website. Then your site's sell-through is 120:1 (pronounced 120 to 1).

Once you know your site's sell-through, you can mathematically predict how many orders you're going to receive based on the amount of traffic coming to your site. For example let's say that your sell-through is 88:1. So if you get 88 visitors per day to your site, you'll get one order. 880 visitors daily will get you 10 orders. And 8,800 visitors will bring in 100 orders.

Here are some things you can do to increase your site's sell-through:

  1. Utilize an effective sales letter, which you can write yourself or pay a professional to write for you.

  2. Utilize an effective headline and killer copy.

  3. Present your visitors with an "irresistible offer."

  4. Always emphasize benefits rather than features.

  5. Utilize the Internet's "level paying field advantage" and make yourself look bigger than life. If people suspect that you're a teenager operating out of his bedroom, they won't feel confident in ordering from you.

  6. Establish your "USP" (unique selling proposition)

  7. Utilize testimonials and effective guarantees to give visitors confidence in your product.

  8. Make it easy for your customers to order. Accepting credit cards will increase your sell-thru.

  9. Analyze your stats and determine your high "exit pages," then adjust your site to minimize hopping.

  10. Make your site "sticky" so visitors will want to return. We discussed this concept in detail in a previous column entitled "Make Your Site Sticky!" which can be found online at: www.eHits.com/AskVicki/081000.

The above items are discussed in detail in "Site Sell 2000" which is part of the Traffic 2000 web marketing course. You can download an evaluation copy from www.Traffic2000.com/download )
